Chilling and Gelid

Our winter chills remind us of how delicate nature is and how dependent it is on our weather and its seasons.  So often the beauty of frosts amongst leaves are seen but soon forgotten when the temperature rises.
The word gelid is from the Old English fġebēon which comes from the past tense of bēon – “to be”.  This must demonstrate that in earlier centuries the winters were far more severe than they are today and it was part of normal life simply “to be” very cold.
