December 2022 Drifts into Floods
This oil pollution came into and through my organic garden in March 2021. My monthly records show how it has stuck to everything in its path and now, 21 months later, its consequences are still not entirely understood and certainly do not want to be imagined.
I have created these monthly videos to prove how devastating a relatively small spill of one thousand litres of heating oil can indiscriminately taint and foul everything in its path. I have mapped out what will tolerate its contamination, there are certainly some plants that seem to have thrived, such as Marsh Marigold and Meadowsweet. Perhaps these are the type of plants that need to be established in areas of contamination to let nature do its marvellous job of cleaning up after us?
It feels very offensive to suggest that, but we have to manage the disasters we have caused against the natural cycles and resources of this planet. Observing, studying and recording what we live with in nature will always benefit better management of the travesties of our own carelessness.
