Hospitality for August Solitary Bees

At the end of July this newly installed solitary bee habitat welcomed a number of new residents, but by the middle of August things were heating up, and it wasn’t just the temperatures soaring into the 30 degrees either.
The female Blood Bee (Sphecodes spp.) aggressively approached the nests. It wants to break into a sealed cell made with leaves brought by the mother leaf-cutting bee and destroy the host egg before it replaces the egg with her own and then she will reseal the nest. Recorded August 2022
