Wood Pile Rotting
Leaving wood to rot and decay allows nature to do what it is always so eager to do – use everything that can deteriorate and then make it into something else. We pass by rotting wood every day – May 2021.
We throw it into landfill. We burn it and we generally don’t like it hanging around, or rather, lying around. Attracting all kinds of miniature worlds of living and extraordinary organisms it will provide everything that plants need to grow in.
This shows what eighteen months can do in completely a world of its own (in my organic garden) – January 2023.
June 2026 -The wood pile remains in its own place ( I have added to it in the last 5 years) and I was delighted, last week, to find dozens of minuscule, very young and tiny grasshoppers jumping out of my way as I passed by the old woodpile. They will have been growing under the wood because their eggs are laid there, favouring the contact with soil and protection of wood above them. This has meant that my “grasshopper bank” has wandered downhill 4 metres because there is no sheltering wood left up there for them. But also, the grass the hoppers were jumping on was low enough for them to move around on. The log pile is situated amidst tall grasses, all of which favour the little creatures and also gives them their name – Grass Hopper – July 2026
